چکیده

Simple topological vulnerability metrics are defined for the air transportation system, that are meant to reflect the impact levels of potential disruptions including severe weather and man-made threats (e.g., cyber attacks). Specifically, a flowvulnerability metric is defined using the Laplacian matrix of the air traffic network’s graph. In turn, event and total vulnerability metrics are posited. The main focus of this study is to evaluate and parameterize these metrics using simulations of flow-level models of the airspace system, together with some formal analysis. These simulations suggest that the vulnerability metrics show promise as indicators of disruption impact. Keywords-air traffic management, security and resilience, weather impact, threat assessment

Comparing Situation Awareness Measurement Techniques in a Low Fidelity Air Traffic Control Simulation

Changes to the National Airspace System will occur as part of the Next Generation Air Transport System. The consequences of these changes on the situation awareness of pilots and air traffic controllers need to be identified. Before situation awareness metrics can be deployed towards this goal, metrics that can unambiguously capture baseline levels of situation awareness in the current day Nati...

Validating The Airspace Concept Evaluation System Using Real World Data

This paper discusses a process for validating the Airspace Concept Evaluation System using real world historical flight operational data. ACES inputs are generated from select real world data and processed to create a realistic reproduction of a single day’s operations within the National Airspace System. ACES outputs are then compared to real world operational metrics and delay statistics for ...

Smoothed traffic complexity metrics for airspace configuration schedules

This paper is a continuation of previous research on optimal airspace configuration. It is expected to improve the predictability and the flexibility of the airspace management process by computing realistic predictions of the sectors opening schedules in En-route ATC centers. In previous papers, we selected relevant complexity metrics to predict the controllers workload, using neural networks ...

Using the Taxonomy and the Metrics: What to Study When and Why; Comment on “Metrics and Evaluation Tools for Patient Engagement in Healthcare Organization- and System-Level Decision-Making: A Systematic Review”

Dukhanin and colleagues’ taxonomy of metrics for patient engagement at the organizational and system levels has great potential for supporting more careful and useful evaluations of this ever-growing phenomenon. This commentary highlights the central importance to the taxonomy of metrics assessing the extent of meaningful participation in decision-making by patients, consumers and community mem...

Building a Comprehensive Conceptual Framework for Power Systems Resilience Metrics

Recently, the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters (extreme events), which have a high-impact low-frequency (HILF) property, are increased. These disasters can lead to extensive outages, damages, and costs in electric power systems. A power system must be built with “resilience” against disasters, which means its ability to withstand disasters efficiently while ensuring the ...
